Me and Paige headed out to CVS this afternoon to pick up another case of Bright Beginnings. In addition to the mega high calorie/nutrition stuff she is is getting through the night she is still drinking a pediatric milk supplement during the day too. We strolled in and picked up the goods without a hitch (remember this post?). The BEST part of CVS are the shopping carts that look like little cars.

I got to wondering today if there was much of a difference between the two supplements besides the taste (vanilla soy vs. "unflavored"). Here is the breakdown including whole milk (like many kids her age would've been drinking) Soy milk (like she was drinking) and the two supplements(bright Beginnings during the day and Peptamen at night with the pump).

Protein
Whole Milk.....................8g

Kirkland Soy Milk..........7g

BrightBeginnings............7.1g

Peptamen.......................7.5g

Fat
Whole Milk......................8.2g

Kirkland Soy Milk..........3.5g

BrightBeginnings...........11.8g

Peptamen.......................9.6g

Carbs
Whole Milk......................11g

Kirkland Soy Milk..........9g

BrightBeginnings...........26g

Peptamen.......................34.4g (whoa!)

Calories
Whole Milk......................150Cal

Kirkland Soy Milk..........100Cal

BrightBeginnings...........237Cal

Peptamen.......................250Cal (dang girl!)

Clearly the supplements are the way to go (despite the fact that peptamen has a warning on it that it "may not be appropriate for individuals with milk allergies" thank-you-very-much). We're getting a lot of bang for our buck with these.

On the flip side, this also illustrates how alarming Paige's situation is. Even with triple the carbs and all that extra fat and calories, PLUS the regular diet of any 19 month old kid, she still hasn't gained any medically significant weight. I'm tired of all the unknowns and of not knowing how and if we can get her well again. Is it terrible of me to hope something shows up in the biopsy? I'm ready for answers. I'm ready for progress......Sigh.....I'm ready for bed.

No, it's not terrible. Sometimes it's easier when there is something to treat. Like when you have a cold for a month. You want it to turn into something so that you can get an antibiotic. :)
